Whichever logo designer you may choose among the great army of individual logo designers as well as large and small logo and graphic design companies, you are very likely to be asked by each logo designer to provide almost the same information necessary to create a logo in total conformity with your likings and business peculiarities. In this article I would like to sum up the details any logo designer may ask you before starting to create a logo for you. This information is likely to safe customer’s time and to help him/her to be prepared for communication with a logo designer.

Information a customer has to provide to a logo designer
- Customer’s contact information;
- Name of the company, brief background and description of services (what the company does, what it sells and where etc.);
- Type of the project (redesign, or designing a logo from scratch);
- Logo design deadline and whether the deadline is fixed or flexible;
- Current website if you have one;
- Describe your company strong points which make you stand out from your competitors (it can be higher product quality, expertise, years of business experience, location, services etc.)
- Indicate the exact name which will appear on the logo;
- Do you have a motto, tag line? If you do, do you want it to appear on the logo?
- Provide or describe any images or icons you want or do not want to be incorporated into the logo;
- Please, inform the logo designer about your corporate colors or any preferred colors to be used in the logo or those which should be avoided;
- Every business has its attributes or trade tools which you may want or not want to be included in the logo. Please, let the logo designer know about it if you have any ideas;
- Do you have any typestyles preferences such as light, heavy, classic, handwritten etc. You may not have any preferences here, and the logo designer will consider which typestyle is better on his/her own;
- What is the message you want to convey to your customers?
- Will the logo be printed or used on the web or elsewhere?
- If possible, list the websites of your main competitors in the market. Tell the logo designer what you think about your competitors’ logos and how you want your logo to differ from theirs;
- If possible show a few logo designs you like and explain why they appeal to you (e.g. imagery, quality and quantity of text, colors, form, general atmosphere etc.). Provide your current marketing materials, if any, and inform what you like or do not like about them;
- If logo design budget packages are indicated on the logo designer’s website, please, choose the one which is the most convenient for you and inform which one you have chosen;
- Indicate if you want other services the logo designer or graphic design company provides (like stationary design, website design etc);
- Indicate your target audience and market (age, gender, geography, lifestyle, income, employment and other information about your target audience);
- What impression you want a customer to have about your products or services?
- Where your logo will appear most of all (business cards, printed media, website, signage, cars and trucks, cloths);
- Share your thoughts, ideas, visions, requirements etc. about your logo design.
If you provide information on the most of the above stated items you can be absolutely sure that you will eventually get the logo design corresponding to all your wishes and market niche which will enhance your business activities. It will allow you and the logo designer to shorten the pre-design period and concentrate attention specifically on the logo design process.
